Question Neutral Saftey Switch

I have a 78 F150 460 / C-6 switch is on tranny . What wires on the plug under hood do i jump to test backup lights ? Truck starts in park or neutral so part of it works . Anyone know what color wires to look for ?

The easiest thing to do is unplug the switch on the side of the tranny. You should have 4 wires going to the switch. Two of them will be red/blue. These are the neutral safety part of the switch, so ignore these. The other two are the back-up lights. Just short them together and the back-up lights should come on.

But, I see you have a 78 f150 with a 460. No way is this combo original. So I can guess the wiring is all messed up. If this truck was originally an automatic, then the wiring should be already there as I described, though some of the early trucks did have switches on the steering column(I am not sure what year this ended).

If this truck was a manual tranny truck originally, then I would look down underneath where the wires could have went to the top of the tranny for the original back-up switch. In the later years, Ford used a black/pink for the reverse lights.

Yes !! I hear this alot its a Explorer / Ranger 1/2 ton I got this new off show room floor in 1978 it is rare with J vin code and came with 460 and C-6 auto also it came with no emission controls RARE breed 2wd . You spoke of color of wires you still think its correct ?? When i get time i will scan the window sticker and post this info Thanks

Question

Should the red/blue wires have any voltage on them mine does not is this normal ? The only wire that reads voltage is the white wire

This diagram shows the wire going to and from the switch as a red/black for the backup lights. The neutral safety is a red/blue in and a red/blue out. They used red/blue for this circuit for many years.
