As my user name implies, I have a 1950 f4 I am tinkering with. So far I have: rebuilt carb, replaced all rubber hoses/lines, replaced coil, and finally replaced the dreaded WM wheels with solid 19.5's(only scored 4 but they have brand new tires on them!). With all that said, the brake master cylinder has bit the bullet & Is leaking like a screen door on a submarine. Rebuild or replace? Anyone done a rebuild, how difficult & how many adult beverages required?
Thanks.
Rebuild kits are available for the old M/C's. But a lot of the guys lean toward a dual reservoir M/C for safety reasons. If you lose brakes on one axle you still have the other to stop with. Not sure where they source these M/C's but I'm sure someone will pop in who's more experienced on such things. Also welcome to FTE! Glad to see another F4 being saved.
There are a few threads on here that members put the booster MC on under the cab in the original place. Just know your brake size and make sure you get big enough for your shoes and fluid needs. I have a F6 and had to go with a chevy unit that was 1.25 bore to deliver enough fluid for my shoes. Remember you only have to deliver your bore to 2 wheels.
50model-F4, Welcome to FTE! Glad to see another F4! What does your truck have for a bed? We do need to see pics! You can get a master cylinder from Rock Auto. I would recommend that if you are staying with the original type master cylinder, that you replace the master cylinder instead of trying to rebuild the one you have. Unless your original is already sleeved with brass or stainless steel, it will probably be too deeply pitted inside to hone and accept a new kit.
Thanks for the input. I believe I will order a replacement & let er' rip. I hate to put too much into this truck as I will be trying to find her a new home soon...........too many projects too little time. I just could'nt let the PO chop her up.
Do you have digital pix of your truck from digital camera or phone on your computer? If so it is easy to add them to a post (assuming the file is not too large). Find the pic on your computer and leave it open while you come here in another window. Compose a post, click where you want the pic to appear in the post. Click on the picture icon at the top of the posting box (looks like a postcard with mountains and sun) A dialog box will open asking if you want to drag a pic onto the box or browse your computer to find it. If you have the pic open, go there, right click anywhere on the pic and chose copy from the menu. Come back to your post and right click on the box. Select paste from the menu. Your picture should appear (it may take a few seconds to load) in the box. Now left click on the insert button.
If the stars all aligned your picture should now be in your post window. Select post to have it appear on the forum or repeat to add more pix. Some cameras make huge files these days that are larger than the forum limits. You may need to resize or resample the picture and save the smaller file version with whatever picture editing software came with your picture taking device before you can post it.
Job Lot Auto is a good source for brand new brake parts for the bigger trucks. A while back they had a package deal consisting of MC, four wheel cylinders and three hoses for $300. It's been I while since I checked with them so I don't know if they still have the parts but when I did check it out the guy there said these are new parts, not rebuilt. I'm just putting this out there for future reference for anyone else looking for these parts are willing to put out the dough.
Thanks for the input. I believe I will order a replacement & let er' rip. I hate to put too much into this truck as I will be trying to find her a new home soon...........too many projects too little time. I just could'nt let the PO chop her up.
Thanks,
Corey
Sorry to hear you are not planning to keep it, but glad to hear that you did save it. It looks to be a pretty good base for a project. Is that spot on the A pillar where somebody started cutting to chop the top?
It's got to be the angle, not sure of dimensions, but it's a small back glass. Also, thanks for posting/relocating my pic, I have still yet to master that........I'll try & post underhood & interior pics asap for any would be buyers.
Thanks

To harleymsn, no, cab is unmolested. Never cut on from what I can tell. Has surface rust, not sure if that is what you are seeing.
OK, when I blew up the original picture it looked like the a pillar may have been cut. But perhaps it is just the rubber missing and a shadow or rust that made it look cut.
