I have been noticing my brake pedal is very firm on and off also my power steering seems to get harder to turn than other times. But today i was sitting at a few lights and could hear my power steering pump growling at me intermittently if you want to call it that. Do you guys think a simple flush will fix this? Also sometimes my truck will pull to the left or right then it goes away if i hit the brakes again. I don't see how the hydra-boost system would do something like that. But its not the slide pins because i just greased those along with new brakes and rotors all around at the beginning of winter. I noticed when i grabbed my fluid lines going to the hydra boost from the power steering pump they seemed to rattle very rough so that makes me wonder if the pump isn't going out. How are the brakes supposed to be on these trucks? nice and soft? rock hard?
I did my power steering flush after watching that video as well. It was a good help and I would have used power steering fluid had i not seen this beforehand.
thanks tray.. he has another one on IPR rebuild which is top notch..
Wow! What a difference the flush made for me! No more whine and firmer brake pedal. The video was excellent. What is Trey's member name so I can rep him?
I went all out and jacked up the front and used the clear tubing. I did have to use an extra quart of ATF because I did let air get in the system! I just added another quart until the ait bubbles were gone. Another reason to use the clear tubing.
This is one of the easiest maintenance tasks that you can do on this vehicle.
Since it is growling, you should definitely give it a try. Flushing it out bought an additional 15k miles on the old pump.
Then it started growling at highway speeds and I decided to go ahead and change it prior to complete failure.
Ford will charge between $198-235 for the replacement pump. Better deals can be had elsewhere for about $55.
If you have to change it, be sure and get the specific pulley puller that you will find in the write-ups on here. It becomes important when you reinstall the pully.
AutoZ*ne has the puller for rent. Here is a link to an excellent thread:
My truck is also an 02 and when it had about 140K on it my pump started growling and whining. I flushed it and changed to synthetic and it's been great ever since. Matter of fact it's probably time to do it again.
i did mine the fluid in there was so nasty and old the smell of it was putrid but got it out i dont think i flushed it as much as much as i could but atlleast that old stuff is somewhat old i dont think its been changed
I flush mine out at around 30,000 miles or so with Valvoline synthetic and it makes a BIG difference, braking, steering, no noise. At 263,000, knock on wood, still my oem pump. Changed the hoses at around 160,000 for prevenitive maintence.

Yep, synthetic mercon V.
Watch out for the Valvoline MaxLife oil. I almost bought some the other day and it said Mercon V L or something close to that. My understanding is that you do not want run "L" in our trucks.

Maxlife ATF is valvoline cover all ATF... it is thinner at operating temp than Mercon V specs...
