Tire Time

Blew out a sidewall yesterday on my F150.

Considering between the Falken Wild Peak AT and the Cooper Discoverer A/T3 in the 31x10.5x15 or P265/75/15 (nearly identical size, but the P-Metrics seem to be a little cheaper).

Thoughts/Experiences with either tire?

Just put Falken WP HT's on my '89 last summer. Stock size. No complaints, seems to be wearing well.

Edit: put a LT on it. The P tire will be too mushy(sidewall strength) for a truck> Ask me how I know!

I've heard good things about the Coopers, but no experience. Haven't heard much about the Falkens.

Regarding the sizing, P-metric tires usually aren't as strong as the LT series. I'm not sure where the "flotation" ratings fall there, but I think they're more like the LTs. When the same tire is available in either series you'll pay less for the P tires, but you're getting what you pay for. If passenger car tire (what the "P" stands for) are good enough for you (and for the majority of half ton truck users they probably are), then that's fine. But if you need light truck tires you ought to get them.

We have actually had both of those tires on our 05 F-350, and I prefer the Falkens. They have perform pretty well in both snow and mud, and they seem to be wearing well.

I didn't like about the Cooper's because we broke 2 belts in the month that we had them on the truck, and we've had the exact same problem with every other set of Cooper tires we've tried for our 2 cars and suv, and everyone of those cars ended up with broken belts. And we drive our vehicles pretty easy, avoiding pot holes whenever we can

Maybe I just had a stroke of bad luck, but I'll never buy Coopers again.

My Father in law has the Falkens on his dodge 2500. They are the worst tires i have ever seen . He absolutely can NOT get any traction if there is any precip on the road. Thats stopping and starting. I had to tow his 26ft travel trailer with it last hunt this season its the last time I will ever drive that truck untill he gets new tires. Dont get me wrong I'm not positive on specs on HIS tires. but i cant imagine their much different in compound.
Just my personal experience to help you to deiced.

You appear to have a crewcab. heavy TRUCK. I would get TRUCK tires since you have a TRUCK

As for which tire? Flip a coin. I am pretty pleased with the Falkins I have on my ranger. I plow snow all winter and haul all kinds of C R A P all year. I now have 88k on them I am sure they will go to 100k

I see the real problem................

I was skeptical when I got them myself, but even with a 2wd I had no issues this winter getting around and my LS is trashed and I'm back to one-wheelie-peelie til I rebuild it when the weather gets warmer.

Thanks for the replies. I thought the LTs were the way to go but looking at the specs, the Load Rating on the P-Metrics is higher (not a lot, but higher), 2200ish vs 2400ish. Am I interpreting this wrong?

It is my daily driver with a little towing of a 89 Wrangler on a 18ft car hauler (est 6000lbs) no more than 5-6 times a year.

I personally would put an LT tire on the truck. Yes more expensive but if you're towing even that much it would be worth it.

when looking for tires for my 02 diesel last year i went to the tire distributor near my work shop. the owners all have cooper AT-3's on their personal vehicles.
that was enough to convince me. i put them on my truck and they are without a doubt the best tires i have ever bought.

i was a little concerned about the aggressive nature of the tire and road noise, but they are quieter than the old firestone transforce i took off.
