Exclamation EGT Help.

Hello Guys. So i need some help concerning my EGT Temps. I have a edge insight cts, and have the egt probe on drivers side manifold. It has a mbrp turbo back and also just truck has a tune on it. Im not sure as to which one because I purchased the truck like that and havent had the money to buy myself a good Tuner. SO my question is what are normal EGT temps? I feel like mine may be to high. going down the highway at 65 70 i am at 650 to 700. But what really gets my is if im getting on the highway and kicker down they jump to 1100 1200 real quick. and im not even pushing it down the hole way. Also i noticed today when i was leaving my house. just pulling out from a dead stop they shot up to 800.. Any suggestions??

Nothing more than 1350 for sustained more than a minute, never more than 1400. Those numbers are pretty normal. As long as you are not towing, I don't think you will have an issue, but if you are towing, the tune needs to come off or you need to load a tow safe tune. Either that or watch the EGT like a hawk! I only have an FICM tune and I have only rarely see over 1350 towing 8500 lb TT amd a truck loaded down a bit too. Sustained grades towing in a higher gear, max boost, generally, 1250 to 1300 all day long in 100 f outside temps. Never a problem.

Your temps are fine, just watch them close while towing or at wide open throttle, make sure they stay below 1300. If you pop over 1300 for short periods of time its ok but you don't want to keep them there long.

Thanks alot for the replies guys. Mhoefer i noticed you said you have a FICM tune. What is that? sry new to diesels and trying to learn as much as i can. I just replaced my FICM with a halfshell due to starting to get low volt readings.. Also you said about taking my tune off. How would i do that seeing i dont have the tuner that was used to put it in? I was thinking of going to ford and getting PCM reflashed but wouldnt that make my truck start throwing codes since i have a egr delete.

If you have mystery tunes on the truck, I'd start fresh with a PCM wipe from Ford followed by an SCT 3015 to turn off the EGR light. Add in a call to Power Hungry Performance or Ed@ ficmrepair.com for a FICM tune, and you'll have a better, known PCM strategy and tune in the truck.

Those temps are just fine.

The SRL series tunes in my truck will put it up around 1500 degrees under WOT

I have an Atlas 40'tune on my Fuel Injection Control Module, aka FICM. You can also get an 80 HP tune. You can also stack the tune you have with an FICM tune, but I don't know how good an idea that is when you don't know what kind of tuner. I would not recommend running over 1400 degrees f ever, but as others are posting some think short bursts of 1500 are ok.

Any possible way to get info from the previous owner on the tuner used and what you are running would be worthwhile. Otherwise, wipe it and start fresh. It's possibel its just an EGR delete tune like mentioned you could do after reverting to stock but that's a waste if that's already what you got. It would be really important if this is anything but an SCT tuner with canned or custom tunes to revert to stick, as there are also bad effects on tuners that don't tune the transmission such as bully dog.

Do you know if the heads have been studded, or still try head bolts?

Mike i do know that it has ARP headsteads. oil cooler was just replaced about 5k ago and a coolant filtration was added also. Im not so sure about previous owner because i bought the truck from louisiana and had it shipped to me here in PA. Just to be safe i think i am going to get the pcm flashed. Would i be able to shut the egr sensor off with my edge insight cts? Also with a FICM tune do you have to get a new one or how does that work? Considering i just got one from ficmrepair. So i take it SCT is the best for a 6.0? thanks again for all the help too.

Good deal. I don't know edge products well, but perhaps yes it can. You will have to read up on it. Studs, cooler, coolant filter all sounds great. The edge is set up to run as gauges as well as a CTS, is there perhaps an edge tune in t here or is it just a monitor. That will be handy to have.

Yes, you send the FICM to Ed to get the FICM tune. So you already have an Ed rebuilt one?

I don't own a SCT but my years of reading on this site say SCT is the way to go. I am sure others will chime in here for you.

I think you are on the right track going back to stock, then if you do buy an SCT you can shut off the EGR function and tune. The first part of tuning is to back up your existing Ford tune so you can revert to stock when troubleshooting. I would keep the Edge just do r the monitoring. If you don't have a manual for this perhaps someone can scan it to you or find on the web?

It's always best to start your own thread so the original poster's thread doesn't get muddied up with off topic posts.
