6.0 accelerates itself...????

So yesterday I started my 04 F350 6.0 let it run for a minute, after a few seconds it revved and stopped. Was like huhh?? o well....went on about leaving and driving. It drive fine..

Then today i was sitting at a stop light and the truck accelerated for a sec or two and tried to power itself over my brakes and into the intersection...it was kinda scary..and it got me concerned!!

Anyone have any ideas what that may be? Or what the problem is???????????????

Probably ICP sensor. I would guess you have an early 04 and it'll be under the turbo. To be sure, look on top of your passenger side valve cover, towards the front, for a small sensor and harness. If you can't find it there, look here and read about 2003/ early 2004 ICP....

I had that happen on my 04 DW, it started doing that after a trip to the dealer (one I refuse to ever deal with again). Truck was taken in for trans service and the service manager told me they flashed my truck with a new update. I really didn't want that update and hoped they would do it without asking first. Took the truck back and the ICP had gone bad, it was warrantied. I was sitting at a light and the truck decided to try and take off into traffic, made me pukker a little.

EGR carbon can cause that, mild acceleration is called "surging".

Don't worry, never heard of a Ford going Toyota.

When was the last time the intake plenum, EGR valve etc. got cleaned?

Slap a Toyota decal on it and call it normal! Or blame it on the carpet?

If it is EGR carbon, the through way to do it is to clean the entire EGR system, intake plenum, and turbo.

The cheapie way I did was to clean the EGR, get all the carbon out I can, then Italian tuneup the rest.

Could be wrong, but I've never heard of egr carbon causing the 6.0 to accelerate on its own.

Here is how it happened. Explanations welcome.

It was around -10F out, fairly cold, engine warmed up.

I was pulling into a parking spot, and the idle went up (surged) maybe about 500 rpm.

It is not the high idle that normally kicks in after it starts after a minute or so.

At about the same time, the CEL went on... and I got the usual EGR codes.

After weather warmed, problem never returned.

EGR was cleaned, and usual problems with carbon particles jamming things..

just because you have an egr code does not mean that is the issue. you really have to have a grasp to follow this stuff sometimes. icp, ipr, vgt, ebp, fuel pressure, ficm, injectors. can all cause egr concerns. Anything that effects idle or driving effects crankcase scavaging. Any time we have a scavaging concern we can get egr malfunctions.

for the op. I suspect ipr issue, possible icp but that will almost always make it surge, misfire etc. not lundge and rev it self up.

first time my icp went bad it would cause my truck to surge, no other symptoms. second time it went bad it just started pissing oil like crazy, still no driving concerns. third time it went bad just had the cel on, that was the beginning of my wiring nightmare this past christmas. corroded wires, 2 ficm's and 2 pcm's later im still a little scared of it
