possible manifold leak

So I think I have possible manifold leak in my exhaust and its because when the engine is super cold, and I do have a straight pipe, but it sounds like a tractor... until it warms up after few minutes, it goes away.

My exhaust manifolds are rusted to crap and stuff is falling off, paint or whatever there was on them.

Now I've looked at bunch of videos on UT to get a better understanding since everyone says the nuts and studs are hard to remove or snap.

Now my question to anyone who's done this in their garage; I've seen bunch of videos where the stud snaps flush, then he takes a nut, puts it over the hole, holds it up with needle pliers and uses a MIG to start welding it... stud to nut... then puts a wrench and off it goes.

Now, I'm not a pro welder or anything so is it possible to by accident weld the stud, nut into the head and then never ever be able to undo or take either one out?? or is the head or whatever made from different material that won't get welded to the nut or the stud??

you weld inside the center of the nut or washer ... to the stud. You should have the welding rod quite a way from the outside of the nut and the head or manifold...

Friend had them snap off. He said the FORD dealer told him to drill into the stud 1/8 inch lower than the head, then work them out with a punch. Said the studs "corrode" to the head and getting that off will get them out....... maybe a movie on U-Tube ?

steve(ill) has a good idea also.

the more I think about it I think the story was that the stud corroded on the top thread into the aluminum head. They would grind the stud flush, drill a pilot hole into the stud to tap in an extractor, but before the did that, they drilled the stud about 1/16 - 1/8 inch deep to get the top thread or two out . That is where the corrosion "welds" the steel to the aluminum head. The extractor screw the rest of the stud out real easy after the top thread is removed.

ok, so I'm back from vacation; a well needed one.

Anyways, looking back at my headers or manifolds.. I've read a lot that people had trouble taking them off and things snapping as I state above in first post.

Anyways, looking at my manifolds today... I noticed something. I think the manifolds were replaced before already or at least the fasteners. If I'm correct, the manifolds are bolted in.

Can anyone take a look at the photos I took and confirm. It would save a ton trying to remove these vs whatever else, unless the PO did a **** job with bolts.

Thanks in advance!

YEs, it appears you have bolt heads instead of studs and nut. They still look to be in very poor condition. Maybe they will come out easier since they are not original, maybe they were not "TIGHT" and leaked..... but the appearance is not good.

Yeah.... surprised of their appearance; even for 40k or whenever those were done.

Really hoping for easier pull. I'd rather skip any sig welding nuts or tapping. I'm also hoping since not original some dummy didn't put anything that would make these a one time deal.

Fingers crossed and a scheduled job for the summer which I can do follows on. However not being original might explain my tractor like sound on pass. side lately.

Thanks for your thoughts Steve

the tractor sound is a very small piece of the gasket gone.. When that 1 cylinder exhausts you get a "PUFF", and it happens about 1/8 as many times as the RPM... that's why it sounds like PUFF, PUFF, PUFF.

Mine has been leaking for many years. Found it easier to enjoy the sound than try to fix it. But wife doesn't, mater of fact she is so sick of riding with me and not being able to talk to me (instruct me on how to drive) she's is making me buy a new truck.. I'm sure going to miss my tractor sound!
