it clunks
97 F-150 WITH 167,000 MILES. When I put it in reverse or go forward at low speeds and turn I will hear a clunk in the rear of the truck. It feels as though I am getting hit from behind. I checked the drive line and u joints all tight. Would this be my trans. or ring and pinion. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Is your rear end limited slip? If so it could be the clutch packs making noise while turning a corner. Another thing it could also be is the slip yoke maybe making noise. My 97 F150 w/189100 miles is making noise from the slip yoke I greased the splines once and it only lasted about 6000 miles.

I had the same thing happen to me and found out that it was the ring and pinion. However when I took it to the drive line shop, they inspected the rear end and I was lucky, that the ring and pinion were in good shape, so all they had to do was adjust the back lash on the ring and pinion. A lot of the "97's" have the "clunk" issue.....mine too and nobody can figure out the cause once and for all. I just had another transfer case assy replaced (this is the fourth) in 258k miles. I have decided to go with a aftermarket transfercase assy and a new bullet proof rear drive shaft that will eliminate the "yoke from hell" for ever.
This clunk is probably your problem as well.
Remove the yoke and grease the splines with ford teflon grease.....if the clunk stops, well there you go if not then you have another issue.
