I have a Ford 9" and I have recently pulled axles. I was able to get bearing pressed but looking into the housing and it appears there is a seal in the housing. It feels soft like it maybe wax, but I look at the drawings and I don't see anything. If anyone has any experience with this and what the proper name is please let me know so I can replace it. If it is a seal to be removed, can I just use a seal puller to remove it?
The seal is a light press fit into the axle tube, and is installed before the axle shaft is reinstalled.
To remove it, insert the tip of the shaft into the seal's hole, and pry it out.
Install the new one by using a large socket to tap it into the tube.
Be sure to lubricate both the seal and the surface of the axle shaft where the seal rides before reinstalling.
