i have a front d44 HD that is leakin like a siv out f the axle seals how do i replace them ive taken out the axle shafts before so i know how to get out the shafts but ive never messed with a diff and gears before please help oil is too expensive to be runnin out on the ground like it is
Thanks Dan
the seal is on the inner shaft, it presses into the end of the axel tube
there may be a groove worn in the axel shaft that will have to be repaired also
similar to wheel hub seals, pry it out with a seal hook or screwdriver and press the new seal in
it will have a metal cup with a rubber seal on the inside
It's not as hard as it seems but it is a job. The front gears will have to come out but just mark things so you put it back together the same way. Once the gears are out you'll be able to see the seals and they can be tricky to get at cause you have to work at an angle, make sure you install them properly as they go in reverse of what you are used to. Get a repair manuel for this so you have specs and pic's of what you are doing, this will help give you confidence that you are going in the right direction.
ok i have it all torn down except for the gears in the housing i have already replaced the outer seals when i did the axle u joints drained the oil out of it and have the cover off so what do i mark and where can i get a book that has that in it my haynes book says nothin about it
OK, with the front cover off you'll see the gear pod with two caps holding it in place, they may be marked already, wipe them down and see if you see anything. One may be marked on the top and the other at the bottom but they need to go back in just as the came out, look for a matching mark on the housing. If nothing is there you can make your own marks with a punch. You'll have to find a manual somewhere for torque specs at least, try a library if nothing else.
A small punch will help you get the seals out and as I said above they are tricky to replace, you can try using a socket to tap them in and I always use some silicon on the metal part where they go into the housing. Remember you are working where the oil will be so the seals are put in backwards from what you are used to seeing which makes it harded to put the seals in because you are tapping on the rubber part of the seal.
It's been ten years since I have done this so please try to find a book on this and double check my advice.
i will check the vent tube but i did get the carrier and seals out just have to go and get the new seals tomorrow i also found the tourque out it is around 100 ft lbs i used the tourque wrench to check it then zipped em off with a impact gun
OldMetal has it bang on-pardon the pun. I am at the same stage with my D44. I am going to try to find something that will line up with the seal, and try a long enough bar to drive it in-be a 2 man operation then, but just a thought, until I try it.
Of course it would be more fun rebuilding a D60 from a 78/79 if I could find one. Same idea tho.
I wonder if they put that nice smell in gear oil, so you repair it properly once!
got it all done today and filled up with oil i used a big socket and a broom handle to put mine in and it works good also dont use a 3/4 inch drive socket and a 1 inch diamiter handle it gets stuck easy i have to wait on drivin it till my motor gets put back in but thanks for all of the help and tips it really helped
Thanks Dan
