Unless you have a really big problem you're worried about or are wanting to compare new vs. used to see what shear is doing to the oil, then yes, it's a waste.

I would like to see what new looks like this one time. Then again at next oil change I can compare.

Then send in a virgin sample from the container or you might find the results at bobistheoilguy.com

These are the filters I normally use in conjunction with the Oilguard Bypass filter on the F-250.

From Fleetfilter at $13 each

Wix 51734 & Napa 1734 Oil Filter: FleetFilter Secure Online Store - Wix, Fram, LuberFiner, Baldwin

On the Excursion after the engine rebuild I started using these. has a 10 micron rating compared to the 20 micron rating above, but at the same flow rate as the above full flow filter.

They have some great prices on the 6637 air filters, oil filters, coolant filters.....etc.....

I've been using the Fleetguard LF 9207 bypass filter. Kinda pricey but what the heck, so is a new truck. I am just doing my first oil analysis at 160K, expecting it to come back good.
