Oil Testing

Newer to this site. Did a couple of searches for oil testing and didn't come up with much.
So, how do we get our oil tested, list of labs available?
Thanks again for all your knowledge.

It might have been the search terms you entered. More commonly, it's referred to as 'oil analysis', or the acronym 'OA'. There are a few companies that many use here, and surely they will chime in on the subject, but I use Blackstone Labs: Blackstone Labs. You can order test kits for free, and when you send a sample in, it will cost $25 for the results.

another Blackstone user here. If you want to take samples between oil changes you'll need a vacuum pump or drain valve.

Also, most, if not all, Speedco truck lube centers have oil analysis equipment on-site and give you the results before you leave. I used to use them all the time when I was a big truck owner operator.

Thanks for that y'all.
Interested to see the results as only had truck since Nov. and not much history over 2 previous owners to go how they have maintained my truck.
So far runs good and have to fix oil leaks.

I'll be the negative Nancy on this one. I like using other testing resources. Ones like Amsoil's OAI, Polaris, Schaeffer's, etc since they also report nitration and oxidation values. These are a direct reflection of an oil's serviceability (oil life). Plus the universal averages only applies to Blackstones database - it's not from the manufacturer.

blackstone asks what type oil you are sending it. then do their report on that brand and weight oil.

Never had an OA done yet but I've wondered about this... Are Blackstone universal averages continuously updated based on same engine family results of other OA's? Any bias for mileage? What do other testing facilities use for averages?

Just for comparison, here's a UOA result from Blackstone

And here's one from Schaeffer's oil. (Don't mind the sales rep with a funny accent who's name is on the report. )

And if you want your head to spin about oil analysis, start reading this thread here. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...ml#post8913324

Great reports & a great link to an old post I had almost forgotten about Chris! Boy I miss those days, Wow - that was 5 years ago.............

I think it has taken me this long to understand some of ernesteugene's graphs & posts. Even though we went back & forth disagreeing a lot I really did and still do appreciate all the time and effort he put into his posts, graphs & charts. I find myself using them even now from time to time. Especially the turbo ones. He is one smart & intelligent guy. Is he still a full time RV'er?

I'm still running the oilguard bypass system on the F-250......she's still holding together . Not as many miles as you have on your 350 though! I did not put an oil bypass system on the Excursion. The cost of the filter replacements skyrocketed and made it more expensive and not worth it financially. Plus there are some very nice synthetic full flow filters out there.

Blackstone is the only UOA company that I know of that post a universal average values, which are based on their in house samples of the 7.3L at @ 5,500 mile intervals. As far as I can recall - the past 10 years the universal average for Iron has been 17 ppm.

In the 2nd PDF file Chris (F350-6) posted it shows the chart Schaeffer's uses and supplies with their UOA reports, here is a copy as well. They are all a little different in how they display the information.

remember what you paid for their oil write up? I have a center about 30 mins away, may go there if the cost is similar to Blackstone.

EDIT just called the Speedco center, they do oil analysis for $20, only takes a few minutes. They can extract a sample without doing a full oil change.

Is it useless to get an oil test done after only 500 miles or so?
