I have a 1993 xlt 302 4x4 automatic with a E4OD. I recently aquire vehicle and it has a transmissions issue. I tried to pull codes but I'm not getting anything.
The current situation is. You can only start truck in neutral. You can put it in overdrive and it creeps up to speed like it's stuck either in high gear or over drive. Tach and speedo work. You can put the truck back into neutral. If you shift to any other gear the truck dies immediately. Truck will not start in park. Just wondering before I pull the transmission and pay a local shop all of my money is there anything else I should look at. Side note I got this truck from a young kid and mud is packed in bumpers. It would not surprise me if this occurred while mudding ( not judging as this is why I got the truck)
You might want to inspect the electrical connection for either not making proper connection or broken wires. It also sounds like the neutral safety switch is bad.
Thankyou. We got ice tday here in texas. I will check connectors. Someone also said there might be an issue with torque converter. But I really know nothing about transmissions or converters
The transmission is electronic controlled so it is very advisable to check for codes as well as the connectors (MLPS and solenoid pack). Probably an easy fix.
if ur not getting codes it may very well the computer itself....that is the problem I was having with mine...I bought a used computer for 75 bucks and it runs fine
Thanks for the tips. I have other issues in the cab. Dash lights not working along with check engine light. So I just ordered a digital obd1 tester from amazon so I can see if there are codes. Thanks for the help
I would start by checking and cleaning the cinnection to the mlps on the driver side of the tranny. They are prone (especially Pre-'94) to have water intrusion. If the bumpers are full of mud, God knows what the tranny was exposed to.
Try at least unplugging the sensor and spraying the plug and sensor with a lot of wd40. If the situation imrpoves the shifting, consider changing the sensor and plug with the updated ('94+) gear. Its about $45 at O'Reilly's.
Today I got my code reader andhere are the codes I pulled
78, 85, 10 initially but did not return
14,41,53 stayed in tester.
I called a shop and they told me to discount electrical connector on passenger side and see if it would go into reverse. I cannot find a connector on the right side. The only connector I have seen is for mlps on the left.......
I know for sure it is an 5.0. Dorm jam says e40d. But I guess it could have been swapped. Not sure if someone would go through the trouble. I bought a digital obd1 reader and those are the codes It pulled. I will look for the connector again thank you.
I apologize for questioning your vehicle specifics but it is not common to find an E4OD behind a 5.0L truck of this vintage. Not impossible......The same for two digit codes with an E4OD.
When you find the solenoid pack connector I will be proved wrong.
Thank you for the picture. So I pulled the connector off and tried to start the truck in park and it was a no go. Still has to be in nutreal to start. I could be wrong in my thinking but this eliminates all electrical except mlps right? As these are the only two connectors I have found. I will try to ohm out the mlps to see if there is a short going to it.as stated before when I disconnected the mlps the vehicle won't even turn over. I would assume as a safety feature do to the vehicle not knowing which gear it is in. Thanks again
The current for the starter relay passes through the MLPS sensor so with it unplugged the starter will not work.
The MLPS should pass the current in park or neutral.
Get the starting part fixed before you work with the transmission. It could be the MLPS sensor (also called the TR sensor) out of adjustment or being bad. You could also have a linkage problem.

Those codes don't really relate to the transmission but code 53 could be part of the problem. The throttle position sensor is out of voltage range. That could possibly be sending a strange signal to the computer and that would be telling the tranny to shift funny.
I would still put my bets on the MLPS. In fact...now that I think about it, my computer didn't throw a code for the MLPS until after I replaced and cleared the throttle position sensor and code.
It is probably some short in the MLPS or the sensor is totally out of whack.
