help with codes E4OD

Pulled codes trying to figure out my hard shift problem and came up with:

654 Transmission selector not in PARK
622 Solenoid/circuit failure - shift solenoid 2

Truck is a 1994 f150 4x4 5.8/E4OD

The truck was in park at the time, I've read that there is an electronic sensor for the gear position which I'm assuming now is shot and could that also be causing my starter problems?

What or where is the shift solenoid though? dont even know where to start with that one.

Thanks
Scott

The MLPS is what tells the computer what gear the truck is in. It's also the neutral safety and backup light switch. Try putting the truck in neutral, if it starts then the problem is the switch.

alignment

I believe the MLPS also has an alignment hole in it to determine the center, like adjusting shifter linkage on a Manual tranny. Might better check that also, before changing out the MLPS.

Isnt the truck supposed to be able to start in neutral though?

I talked to a tranny shop just up the road from work today and the guy said that the MLPS may be causing the shift solenoid code aswell. Is this a dealer only type of part or would a parts store one (if available) be acceptable?

I want to get under there tomorrow to check a few things and change the oil so I will see if it looks out of alignment. Any estimates on price of the MLPS if it is faulty?

Thanks
Scott

Update for anyone with a similar problem, had the truck in to a shop today, replaced the MLPS and they found two wires in the harness for the shift solenoid that had corroded themselves away to nothing, the pig tail coming out of the tranny which more commonly is the problem was fine, also got the shifter seal replaced and the tranny flushed. Owner said the tranny looked to be in great condition (yay)

It's great having an automatic I dont need to manually shift any more! and the back up lights are helpful aswell. Shifts soooo nice now.
