Driving home last night my 93 F150 XL E4OD I6 started moving from a dead stop in what seemed to be 3rd gear. I can get first and second gear if I shift to them directly. Reverse and OD seemed to be working fine.
Recent things fixed was the replacement of the VSS and the neutral safety switch based on OBD1 codes and hard shifting. I have pulled the OBD1 codes for KOEO and get 621 with the stored codes of 452,618 and 628. The 452 code is expected as the speedo a couple times a week will go haywire for the first couple of minutes in the morning, so I may need to upgrade that component. What are my next logical steps for testing?
Your losing power to the trans and you've got some codes there also helping to show your bulkhead connector has failed or it's dirty. These may be 2 digit codes for the old diesel but pay no nevermind.Same principles apply.
As a follow up to my problem of my F150 starting in 3rd gear, the suggestion to clean the wiring connector on the transmission was spot on. I had cleaned this and added dialectic grease a couple of months ago but I pulled the connector again and cleaned with IPA and worked on the pins to eliminate this as a possible problem. Plugging back in I regained the normal function of the transmission. Now to get the new VSS to work consistently I should be rid of all my current transmission woes. I also pulled and again cleaned that connector on the rear pumpkin. Several times a week in the morning I will get a couple of minutes of the speedo gong haywire and the transmission hard shifting. (getting stored code 452 in KOEO test). I may need to replace the VSS with a better grade of part if this continues.
Good to hear. They also make new replacement connectors for the VSS too Dirk. You may find corrosion in the clip.If so,if you want to try cleaning up those pins, that might solve it.If you opt to replace that pigtail, make sure to snip the wires back until they're nice and bright. That means going way back a foot or even more if needed.Whatever it takes and run new wires to the new VSS pigtail if needed.Just be sure to use heatshrink around all your connections.
This fits the sterling abs/vss for the f250/f350.If yours is different in the f150 then of course make sure to find the correct one.
