2002 ford explorer 4x4 150k miles when i put it in reverse a loud clunk noise
but when put in drive no clunk noise.but on highway when its shifts a very loud clunk and like a real hard shift !!!!!o/d light is flashing also .transmission shift solenoid ? rear ?
There is a TSB for harsh reverse engagement. I don't have it in front of me, but it is typically either a bad shift solenoid, valve body, or worn bores in the transmission. A little searching of this forum or the Internet should explain with better detail what the common issue is.
i get code po796 which is pressure control solenoid ? should i just change that or the whole pack ? thx and how to tell what trans model i have ? a letter in the vin # thx again
If you confirm the harness connection to the transmission is properly connected and in good shape, if you opt to replace the solenoid, I'd suggest you replace the entire assembly. Chances are pretty good if one is bad now, the others may not be far behind.
As for determining if you have the W or the S, there is probably a tag on the transmission with the code. You may also be able to decode the VIN to determine which you have. I was thinking that the Aviator had one version, the rest (Explorer and Mountaineer) had the other. But I'm far from confident in that statement.

thx
decode the VIN?you mean one letter on the vin will tell if its a w or s
It might, I'm not positive. But there should be a tag on the transmission that identifies the transmission. It may not say "5R55S" or "5R55W" but once you find the code you should be able to determine which you have.
