If you have remote start, try it first. If the truck fires up everytime, that's a pretty definitive sign you've got a weak/failing battery.

Me too. But a remote start let it fire up the first time... I did however go to the dealer and buy two new batteries very quickly.
Another test, when it does it, have a car or truck nearby. Attached jumper cables and try to start it again. If it fires up, then you really KNOW the batteries are getting weak.
Fun part - the batteries sitting will appear to have enough voltage. Only when a load is put on them will they fail to provide enough CCA.
My thought is that when it is cold the batteries have a little less CCA, the motor needs more juice to turn over, and now your glow plugs are being used. When you turn the key, GP fires, warms up motor, the batteries recover from the high load just enough for you to start the truck... And this time, because the motor is warmer, you don't have such a long GP cycle.
