it just didnt want to come out, the plastic tab released fine but the cable wouldnt come out, pliers and tools didnt work so brute force did this, I wonder if someone used the wrong speedometer cable at some point or simply forgot to grease it? cable # SW-D7TA-I7260-UA-9AD
Well now we know why your gauge lights don't work: you destroyed the cluster. j/k
Speedometer cables can sometimes be a b**** to get out. The one in my truck isn't bad, but the one in my '84 Mustang, I could just barely get to release. Wasn't the wrong cable or anything, just really hard to get the clip to release.
Mine was real hard to pull out after the lock was released to yesterday . I have to pull it out again later on and i think i may lube it before putting it back but don't know what kind of lube i should use .
I'm working on more than one truck, I destroyed this cluster to remove it to deal with other wiring issues in this truck, at some point I will swap the speedo guage to fix this cluster. I figured people would want to see what not to do sometimes. Like I said, on this cluster the plastic tab released fine and slid out of the way, the cable is just really jammed in there, I will have to remove the broken gauge end from the speedo cable sometime this week so I can put it all back together.
I recently replaced my cluster with a new one from LMC truck. I pulled it to change the lights to LEDS, and when I had it in my hands with my fingers on the top, it totally caved in. Crumbled like a bag of chips...after 37 years of heat from the 194 bulbs it was completely brittle...so don't beat yourself up for the broken speedo....more than likely it was already brittle....but now its going to cost time and money ($60) to get back to norm....at least its easy, and good luck.
