this is for a work truck, 77 460 auto, it was missing the inspection cover on the transmission so I assume all the pieces fell out of there before doing damage, what i could see of all the teeth on the wheel was that everything is good, no missing or chipped teeth
Similar starting issues 1967 F-100 with 351W motor (1969). Replaced battery, starter relay, and starter. Good starts for 2 months till today. Start cycle engaged, motor not running, but I couldn't stop the starter from trying to engage the flywheel (maybe?). Pulled key from ignition, pulled choke all the way out---nothing. Burning smell prevalent, After 5 minutes, I disconnected the battery. I am at a loss here.
I would recommend that you start a new thread. This one is 9 years old. Also, the bumpside (not dentside) sub-forum might be more helpful. Lots of similarities for sure, but folks over there will have the correct wiring diagrams for you to look at.
My started went bad so I drove 100 miles round trip and bought a rebuilt from an independent rebuilder.
The started drive busted so I went back and he installed a new one and tore the starter apart to make sure all was good.
For a short while and it bit the dust.
So I ordered a brand new started from rockauto.com for under $100.
The new starter has been flawless.
I can't imagine how many times some of the rebuilt have been rebuilt over the last or so years.
I bet you welded the contacts in the starter solenoid. The starter solenoid mounted on the passenger side innerfenderwell right by the battery. That is why I always carry a small crescent wrench or a wrench that fits the battery cables IN THE GLOVE BOX.
You might of burnt the "fusible link". Orange looking with tab that says "fusible link" the wiring bundle just down from starter solenoid.
