I just replaced my starter the other day with a new one. When I turn the key the truck starts fine, but when I release the key from the start position it makes a loud '' ZIP '' noise. Any idea what's causing this? Is this a defective starter or will the noise go away after use?
The flywheel and starter were replaced last year so I know the flywheel is good. The starter had to be replaced because the threaded post for the starter cable stripped-out. This starter is under warranty, so it can be exchanged.
Well, yeah it's easy to service, but I have to remove the passenger side header to access the starter. No biggie...did it before. I got the starter from the local auto parts store.
I ran into this last fall, where I got a starter, and after laying out on the ground in the cold only to find out the starter was locked up! I called NAPA and they tried to tell me my motor was locked up!
After I educated them up on that, they said they had another on the shelf. I went back and had them bench test the starter while I waited. I could hear them back there testing it, so I know they did, and it worked.
OK...I removed the header and starter yesterday and exchanged it for a new one. The auto parts store tried to tell me I must have a bad flywheel. I told them that's not the problem. They wanted to bench test the old one and I told them I wanted a new one. I asked them to bench test the new one and they did with no problems. Bolted everything back on and it started just fine without any issues.

GREAT, thats good to hear, sometimes you got to get a little firm with the parts houses in order to get through to them.
