noisy 302 starter
I have starter noise that I can't get rid of. I'm not sure how to discribe the noise other than it abnormally load, seems to be kind of a grinding noise like the starter is not meshing right with the ring gear. This is a new starter, the last one had the drive gear come apart. I have tried using shims to move the starter away from the flywheel and have installed with no shims, it doesn't seem to make much difference. Any ideas?

Pull the starter and look at the teeth on the flywheel as someone turns the engine by hand, Could have some worn bad enough not to make good contact. Another possibility is you might have picked up a new/bad starter (i have seen this happen before).
