I have a 1990 f150 xlt lariat, 302 that i just swapped out the automatic for the m5r2 5 speed, when i started it up, it started, but made this noise that seems to be coming from the starter, like its not releasing off of the flywheel and just riding along with it. Also after I came back later to try it again the battery was completely dead (a pretty new battery).
does anyone know what the problem could be? i have seen other answers about the starter continues to crank, but mine stops cranking and just rides along with the flywheel...

Did you use the old starter off the Auto? I'm not sure about this truck but I know it is common for Fords to use a different starter for a manual then a auto, it has to do with the length of the nosecone on the starter as a flywheel is different then a flex-plate. If it is turning all the time with the flywheel it will over rev the starter and blow it up.
If the engine wont stop cranking and the starter is sticking on, it is most likely the starter solenoid needs replaced on the pass inner fender.
ya its the old starter, I was planning on replacing the drive, but now that you mention the different starters for manual and trans i may not, if its just gonna break again.
