I am having clearance issues with my garage door with the type 8 mirrors. Are there any options with replacing them with a folding pair without drilling new holes? If I have to drill new holes which mirror will at least fit into some of the existing type 8 holes? Possibly Type 9's. Thanks
There is one TYPE 7, 5 different TYPE 9's. At least 2 of the TYPE 9's have a different span (6 11/16" [D6TZ-12696-A] vs. 7 19/32" [D4TZ-17696-A]) between their upper/lower brackets.

POSSIBLE!!! Bill, you're usually right, but not always. I took the type 7's off my truck and replaced them with type 9's, they used the exact same holes. The 7's came on my truck from Ford. I didn't bend any brackets to install them.
Hello Ruckin, I have the same Type 8 mirrors on my truck, and I'm not a fan of them either. Each side mounts up using 5 bolts, and there doesn't seem to be any other mirrors that will utilize the existing holes...maybe Type 6 (never, ever seen this style) will use your three upper holes. You might get away with mounting a Type 9 so that one of the existing holes is used, but that is longshot, and big deal, because you still will have four other holes remaining.
I plan to mount some West Coast Jr's and just live with the other holes until I repaint my truck. These Type 2 mirrors are made to be adjustable, but I will have to check my pair to see if they just fold in or require a wrench to adjust.
Type 7 looks like it would require tools to fold it in, maybe someone with this style will chime in.
Type 9 sticks out quite a ways, but since it can be easily folded in, that is probably your best bet...and just learn to live with the extra holes.
I know that I'm going to have those two holes on the bottom of the door but I'm hoping to utilize at least one of the two up top. These things are way too wide and I don't intend on painting the truck anytime soon. Yeah I was looking at the type 2 or 9's as well but I really hate to put more holes on an original painted door. Maybe I can get lucky and paint match them but I'm sure thats a longshot.

Info on TYPE 7 & TYPE 9 mirrors taken directly from the 1973/79 truck parts catalog.
Since most members of FTE have no parts catalog, I'm the messenger, typing what the parts catalogs say.
Since there are at least 3 different TYPE 9 mirrors that have a different span (6 11/32" - 7 13/32" - 7 19/32"). Which one of these mirrors would use the same mounting holes as a TYPE 7 mirror?
Plus, there are THREE different type TYPE 9's used 1978/79. None of these mirrors have their specs listed in the catalog.
