Hello all. I haven't dealt with a clutch in many years. Now I find myself about to install a ZF 5 into my truck, a 75 with a C6.
I ordered a Ram clutch for a 351 with the zf. I'm just a bit surprised with the narrow surface area of the clutch disc. I mean I don't have experience to compare it with other models, but 1 1/16" seems thin. That is the band that meets the flywheel.
Also, does it not seem odd to have a big brute of trans with the zf, only to have a plastic clutch master and plastic line? Is there a known alternative?
Pretty much all clutch hydraulics are plastic nowadays. Master and slave cyl are usually plastic, hose is plastic or rubber. They usually run for years without a problem. I was thinking ofquestioning your description of the ZF since the most common version is rated at 420 lbft torque. But after using a magnifying glass to look at your avatar you will probably be OK. 300 I6? Definitely on my list of favorite gas engines for a truck. I ran a ZF S-5 42 behind a 4bt for several years. Never gave me any trouble but they are a little noisy. I eventually put Royal Purple oil in it, Syncromesh or something like that, made a pronounced positive difference in the noise level.
I guess all clutch discs are like that now. I'm used to more meat, a wider band or circle that contacts the flywheel. I went back and looked on Summit, and even the high dollar clutches have a 1 1/16" wide disc.
Thinking back, this narrow disc band reminds me of a vw disc. The sbc's, even buick 225's, had a wider disc. Oh well. If this is what goes in a F250 with a 351, then so be it.
Thanks for the tip with the oil. And yes, although my 300 is beefed up to the hp of a 360, the ZF S542 will be ample trans. I just had to get the over-drive. I'm also curious to feel the off the line power lost to the automatic. With my hydroboost 4x disc brakes, redhead steering, and now over-drive, I imagine it will be like having a new truck.
I kind of lucked out at the j/y the other day. I found a nice, clean 92 F250 with a 351 and ZF. I took the drive line. I hope that $50 investment will save me $200 by not needing to have my drive shaft remade. I shall find out.
