I have a 1983 F100 with a 302 and automatic transmission. Previous owner installed an electronic ignition. The problem I am having is that I am getting backfires and really no power. Mostly happens right after I start the truck. I think the backfire and no power is because the electronic ignition has a problem. I can get the truck to run fine if I shut it off, coast, and then re-start it.
I pulled the distributor cap and cleaned it. The only other thing that looks different is that the coil appears to be stock.
I am having trouble figuring out the make of the system. When I pulled the distributor cap I saw what is a round series of magnets. The other thing is that the base (right below the cap) has a square part that bulges out. I don't think it is a Petronix or MSD.

Your description sounds like you have the later-model stock TFI ignition, where the ignition module is bolted to the side of the distributor.
Does your distributor have a vacuum advance canister with a vacuum hose connected to it?
