Has anyone changed out the points/condenser for the PerTronix electrical ignition system that fits under the stock distributor. How does it work for you?
My 289 is running on the Pertronix. It is probably the best thing you could ever do for a breaker point ignition system. My engine starts and runs much more smoothly with it than it ever did with the points. I'm with PackRat on this one!
I'm running one on my original 66 Mustang and my 56 truck. The truck had a Mallory dual point distributor in it. After paying megabucks and burning up two sets of points, I put the Pertronix unit in and it runs great. No more points and still looks like a high performance distributor. (Don't tell anyone!)
I've been thinking about doing the same thing on flat head. I seem to recall a thread either on here or the ford flat head site that there had been some problems running it if you retained the generator rather than updating to an alternator.
Swapping in a Pertonix and loosing the points was one of the first things I did on my truck. Starts much easier, no lagging, and just overall run's more smooth. You won't regret it!

As I believe the referenced thread states, the spike when a generator regulator opens/closes was causing real problems, mostly on the 6v models.
I'm leery of the Pertronix just because it isn't as rugged as the typical OEM GM/Ford/MoPar electronics. They use a toothed wheel on most OEM, no light beams, and "reading" the stock points-type dizzy cam seems like a major source of inaccuracy. That said, lots of people love them....
I've had one on the truck for 2 years and on the 55
fairlane 6-volt system for 6 years. No problems and easy installation. I've never heard anybody compalin about pertronix. Jag
installed a pentronix 2 in my 66 mustang car would not start . sent it back and received a new unit car still would not start . sent it back and installed pentronix 1 , car runs great. always used pertronix coils. would really like to install a pertronix in my 54 f100 6 volt w/generator & pos ground.i am afraid to because truck runs great just do not like changing points. i have read a lot of pros & cons about 6 volt pertronix. mike
I know from experience that the 12 volt pertronix set ups like a full 12 volts, preferably more. Make sure your charging system is up to snuff and you will have no problems.
