hey everybody, I did a search on clunking from the rear end and pretty much believe I need to grease up the slip joint. From the other posts it sounds pretty easy to do myself, but can anyone take me through it step-by-step? What exactly that I need to do to remove the drive shaft or whatever to get that slip joint out and clean it out and grease it up?
thanks
Had the same problem and it was the cadian(cv)joint.
As for droping the shaft you will just need a couple of wrenchs. Also there might be a greese fitting on the slip joint.
You can just drop the back of the drive shaft and push it in to see if the slip joint is ok.
1. put the truck up on stands or ramps so you can easily access the rear drive shaft.
2. there is a rubber boot in the middle of the drive shaft with steel clips on either end. these need to be removed so you can slide the boot out of the way.(they can be replaced by zip ties if broken or mangled beyond repair)
3. remove the 4 bolts holding the rear of the drive shaft to the rear axle. be sure to mark an area of alignment so you set it back in the same place when you put it back together. Hold on to the shaft... when removing the last bolt so it want hit you in the head when the bolt comes out. If the shaft does not fall by itself you may need to beat on it with a rubber mallet or lightly tap with a hammer until it breaks free.
4. slide the slipe yoke out and clean both surfaces as well as you can. then regrease them.
5. slide slipe yoke back together. replace 4 bolts. replace rubber boot. put on the zip ties (or clips if applicable) and you are done.
