6.7 fuel filter

Anyone ever break the cap on the frame mounted fuel filter? I have changed mine numerous times with no issues, but yesterday was a different story. Maybe t was because of the cold temperatures, but while using very little pressure, I snapped the plastic housing off. It seems like a stupid design to me, but maybe that is because I have a pretty truck that will not run at the moment. Anyone experience this before?

Very common problem for the filter housing. I keep a spare just for this reason. It sure does come in handy as I broke mine on a Saturday when the parts departments around here were all closed.

I haven't broken one yet, but when/if I do the spare sits in the original box in the tool box mounted on the rear of my truck along with the tools necessary to do the deed.

Anyone have a part number? I google it and it keeps giving me the fuel filter. Not the housing.

lol, I remember this from last year, they still haven't fixed the humorous wording:

Product Description

[BC3Z-9G270-C]Ford fuel cap for lower fuel filter for Motorcraft FD-4615-Ford 6.7 liter diesel(old #-BC3Z-9G270-B).
This fuel filter cap is known to crap when removing or installing.

Maybe there's supposed to be a "go to" in there?

Chuck, maybe they haven't "fixed" the humorous wording because it's true and doesn't need fixing!

Yep, common issue. I use the socket and a strap wrench and go very (very) slowly. So far haven't had it break but it gets harder every time.

I also was planning on stocking an extra filter bowl just in case I broke one during a filter change. My local ford dealer parts guy told me the part number had changed from
BC3Z-9G270-C to BC3Z-9G270-d. The "d" version is new, not sure whats new about it.

I'm curious if the cold weather distorts the plastic any. I parked inside my shop for approximately an hour, where it is roughly 70', and changed the oil and other misc items before working on the fuel filter. Before I snapped the lower filter, I changed the upper filter. I noticed it was harder than normal to remove. the replacement piece, which was a Ford part, would not slide in all the way. I measured both filters with a set of calipers, and the new one was 6 hundredths larger than the other. I had to sand the filter with a belt sander in order for it to fit. This was my third time replacing them, and it seems to get progressively tighter. Anyone else experienced this?

I'm like you, I normally do mine at work in the 70* shop (complete with hoist). I put 15-20 a year on so it becomes time around November, and usually is quite chilly.
The only time I was sweating taking the primary filter off was the very first change back in 2012, prompting me to buy a spare. Last year I did it laying in the snow due to a gelling problem, seemed to make no difference, came right off.
My last filter change the topside filter was much tighter going in than it has been in the past, will find out next fall if I should have sanded it some.......
