Since I broke my el cheapo strap wrench yesterday pulling a home water filter housing, is the 'nut' on the bottom of the primary filter housing 32mm? If so, I'll use that this time until I can buy a decent replacement strap wrench.
Yes Dave, it is a 32mm. Try to get a deep well 6point socket if possible. Or you the same socket that the 6.4s used(short) in conjuction with a ratchet strap and you'll most likely be fine. The two that I have seen break are the one that used shallow sockets...

Thanks Monty.
I never 'enjoyed' a 6.0/6.4 and instead had V10s and a ways back, 460's before this 6.7.
I have an almost brand new, used once 6 point 32mm medium depth impact socket. I had forgotten that I also have a small diameter filter wrench that I use on my little diesel tractor filter that might work too. Now, if it would only get a little warmer out - at least double digits ........
What is the potential for a problem as the Change Fuel Filter Required notice popped up along with the Change Engine Oil soon. IT IS JUST TOO DAM' COLD to work in the garage or driveway with no relief in sight for the next week or so. If those maintenance items can be delayed a few days and at most a couple hundred miles without any problem, it sure would be nice for my aging bones and dislike of lying in a snow drift

My opinion.........a small delay, as you outlined. No big deal. I understand the outside working on the truck......me too.
My changes are are indefinite hold with the temp as I type this at -4*f. There might be one day of moderation on Sunday but the next 10 days it wont be warm enough unless it's snowing I do think I will farm out this oil change to my dealer (too cold) and get the 14E03 mod done as well since the truck has to go in anyhow.
My spare cap came in yesterday and after seeing the WIF and drain plug, I might just order them as well. That and my new filters are piled on my work bench along with the rest of the junk that collects over the winter.
I tried the socket mentioned above on the new cap and it's a good fit, going full depth

Finally, we got some good weather plus my time coincided and I got the filters changed. I hadn't really worried that it was overdue and with good cause as the old filter (the one underneath) was very clean with no water nor any sludge at all in the cover. One of the engine compartment filter hose connections fought me a couple minutes but it was probably my lack of experience with the coupling releases. Being an '11, I have the band and screw holding it in place - not a problem. I did have an 'awwwww s@#$' event though. I didn't get the drain plug tight enough. A gallon or so of diesel fuel on my crumbling driveway didn't inspire any good words and instead of a 15-20 minute project, it became an hour or so with the clean up using some speedy dry (cat litter). Now on to a brake job in the next week or so.
One other item that I did a week ago was to replace the air filter element - that was cruddy and while it may be my imagination, but the truck seems to be running better. That was actually a little more difficult then the fuel filter change as there is no extra room to jiggle things around
