She is getting close! Turn signal switch advice

Long time!
I was in hibernation and started a new biz.

I got to hear my truck tonight. The old 79 300 was pulled, we rebuilt a new fresh one, put on EFI headers, H pipe, turbo muffler.. omg.. she sounds SO good. Such a different beast! About getting things wrapped up and coming to small bits. One of the last things I wanted to make sure works perfect was all the lights. Well, they all work with the exception of the left front turn signal. It appears that the signal switch inside the steering-column (no tilt, manual) is out. My guy says he can't seem to find a new one under 200.00. It's just the damn front left side.. ug.
SO.. what should I do. Is there a cheep way to do this or really should I do a 200-300 investment for one light?

A shout out to AbandonedBronco! Dude.. that EFI manifold setup is tight.. works brilliant. New single carter and no more manual choke. so smoooooth... like kitten..

I'll get b4/after pics when she is back home.

Welcome back.

I would pull the steering wheel and make sure the switch contacts are OK. Be careful of the little plastic detent plate that cancels the signals as they tend to get brittle over the years and break. While you're in there check the continuity of all the wires to their proper destinations. You may need to buy one of those 5 dollar Harbor Freight DVOM.

If you can't fix it then consider an aftermarket turn signal assembly, as is used on many custom hot rod installations. About $40 bucks.

The biggest drawback to these switches is they are not self-cancelling, so if you forget to manually cancel it you'll find yourself riding down the road with your flasher flashing.

I want to get a sound clip for how she hums now. It kinda sounds like a 289 at idle. low and throat'y. Not like that tractor sound, at all. and no rocker/lifter clickclickclickclick

Maybe this one?

Heya! Long time no hear. Glad to hear it's up and running! Sounds like it's running really nice, too.

For the turn signal, I'm a little fuzzy on what's not working. What exactly doesn't work?

Either way, having had my fair share of turn signal problems, this is what I did to address both.

Dorman® 49304 - Turn Signal Cam

That's the cam that cancels the turn signal when you return the wheel to center. If it doesn't return, that'll fix that.

Then, I had problems with them intermittently not working (which they oddly would after I jiggled the key just right), this fixed that issue:

Turn Signal Switch OE PRO SM51F

Neither were particularly difficult to replace. Just need a steering wheel puller.

Either way, definitely not $200!

Ok thanks man. My mechanic was very impressed with how well that exhaust/efi system turned out.. he's just never seen it or heard of it and he used to play with these 300s as a kid.

Well when you hit the left turn signal, the back/left works, but the front/left is just dead. no light. and it's not the bulb. He tested all the way up into the steering column and said it was the turn signal switch. He was just getting prices from his normal old sources.

Yeah, the EFI setup is awesome.

If that's the case, then it's probably that second part with all the wires. Some connection is going out.

It says it fits:

FORD BRONCO (1978 - 1979)
FORD E-100 (1975 - 1979)
FORD E-150 (1975 - 1979)
FORD E-250 (1975 - 1979)
FORD E-350 (1975 - 1979)
FORD F-150 (1978 - 1979)
FORD F-250 (1978 - 1979)
FORD F-350 (1978 - 1979)

So I would think that would do the trick.

awesome. I'll get her in.

I think the only things that have yet to be rebuilt/replaced..
-rear end
-tranny (but feels good)
-diffs

Can't wait to get her back. The guy is awesome and good at what he does. Just slow going because he has lots of cars to work on. Mine was more of a 'project'.
