Ok guys I have a 66 f100 flareside that I am working on. I have gutted the truck and have been repairing some rust spots. That's nearing to the end and I'm looking forward to the next item on the list, wiring. I want to upgrade to a new harness. I plan to have the bare essentials for circuits 18 max? My question is Painless or EZwiring? Has anyone used a harness from EZwiring? They are almost 2/3 the price of a painless. Opinions?
Are you sure you need new wiring? I removed my entire system, soaked it in Simple Green, repaired obvious defects, wrapped it in electrical tape, and the whole thing literally fell back into place.
Eric
I used and EZ Wiring kit and was not impressed. The wire itself was of decent quality, as was the fuse box, but the "extras" fell far short.
* The wires to the rear lights were too short. (I had to splice in extensions.)
* There were not enough connectors in the kit, and those they supplied didn't work in most applications. Also, the fuse box needs to be screwed in place. Were screws included? Nope.
* The parts included and overall approach to the project were GM-centric. I had to improvise to make it work for a Ford product.
* The instructions were vague--just a couple of diagrams and the promise that the process was "really EZ!"
* A call to their help line was not answered and not returned.
What I would do next time, and would recommend, is spending a little more $ up front, saving time and money overall.
I'm Forrest Gump with all things mechanical and I rewired my '63 with a Rebel Wire 9+3. The couple questions I had were answered efficiently and politely by their tech support - several calls were made on the eve of Thanksgiving and I was surprised somebody answered my phone much less take time to help me.
I need to rewire my 1965. It is a toss up between Rebel Wire and StreetRodElectrics. I am leaning towards the latter. It seems like no one the forum has used them. Wire Harnesses - Ford - StreetRodElectrics.com
I have used the EZ Wire and the American Autowire. The EZ wire kit I installed in a 65 Mustang, it required considerable use of the old OE terminals to connect, wires were good quality and more than long enough for all connections. The "instructions" are laughable, if you don't have a firm grasp on auto electrical wiring, they don't help. That said, I have one to rewire my '66 F100, the price was too attractive and I will not be going OE on many connections. The EZ Wire kits are universal, (read GM oriented) so you will need to get or reuse Ford type terminals.
I wired a '56 Chevy car with the American Autowire kit, it had all the GM specific connectors and much better directions, it was made specifically for the car. A very nice harness.
Thanks for the info Putt, I think I am going to go with that American autowire kit even though it is more expensive. I like the idea that it is vehicle specific.

I will be interested to hear how this turns out. I fear I will need to rewire my truck as well. The previous owner did new guages and half of them do not work or they work intermittently. When I pulled the panel out it looked like a bomb of electrical wire went off Most things were just wrapped together, not even taped let alone done with actual connectors. Not sure if it will be easier to try and figure it all out or just start over.
The American Autowire one looks very good but 2x-4x the price of the Street Rod, Rebel and EZ Wire. Anyone else have experiences they would like to share?
I'm doing mine with this harness. Pretty easy if you know anything about motors and wiring. I ended buying the crimper, and i effed up some of the connectors at first, but i finally got it down. i have the engine, front lights, horn, ignition and wipers wired, then it got too cold to work in the garage so I'm kind of stuck. the harness was a little expensive, but I found it for about $100 less from carolina classic trucks.
Installed American Auto Wiring Harness in the 65 but only purchased individual harnesses; engine/alternator, headlight, and taitlight; unfortunately, the dash harness was not available at the time, however was able to disassemble and make repairs, and added couple additional circuits. Not familiar with the other supplier's to compare with but IMO quality is good and ease of installation, unplug the old and plug in the new. Read the item description for American Auto wiring and not sure if the kit offers additional circuits???
