This is simply a question because I'm curious, not because I plan on doing this any time soon.
I know very little about wiring so I was just wondering how difficult it would be to use a new universal wiring harness (such as those from Painless) on a 80-86 F100/F150? Any major issues that would prevent the average do-it-yourselfer from doing so?
Are you talking about an entire cab & chassis wiring harness? A lot of patience & work. Only you know if you can handle a job. If you want to come to work for me I'll be able to tell if you can handle it in short order.
I have a lot of experience in wiring, (even though I do say so myself) and never really liked the Universal wiring kits unless no other option was open to me.
Some kits make you use your old connectors, and/or splice and crimp wires and connectors for year specific connections. If I was to go as far as to do that, I'd repair the one I have. It would depend on how bad the original harness was though, and if I couldn't find a good used one in the wrecking yard.
The best way to replace wiring is with a year specific harness that's a perfect match for your vehicle. It's the easiest way, as most of the connectors are idiot proof, and alow little room for error.
Thanks. I don't see any kits available for 80-86 trucks so I was curious as to how a universal kit would adapt. The older the wiring, the more I become willing to change it out since I once owned an older vehicle that was a true fire hazard.
