12 volt power for an HEI setup

Hello All!
I have a question that I can't seem to find an answer to when I search the forum. I have inherited a 1978 F250 4x4 that has an ignition problem. The Duraspark module is testing out as fired and the coil is shot. I have decided to drop in an HEI setup and I am looking for a 12-volt source for the distributor.

Here comes my question:

I have decided to run a wire through the loom, the firewall, and back to the ignition switch for power in order to avoid any resistor wire - Am I correct?

My reasoning is:
I have a wiring diagram and i believe the best source for start power is from the "S" position on the switch (the wiring diagram calls this wire "16" and has 2 wires coming from the post - 1 goes to the power for the Duraspark via a R/B wire while the other wire goes to the fuse block.

I have spliced a 14g wire into the wire at the back of the ignition switch and the R/B wire going to the Duraspark power lead, and attached it to the "BATT" terminal on the distributor cap. The other wire remains untouched.

I haven't tried starting the truck up yet as I want to double check with those wiser than I if I have made the right choice

Thanks!

I have an HEI on my engine. I ran a line from the RUN circuit. This will supply the HEI with power when the engine is running. I also ran a line from the 'I' post of the starter solenoid. This will supply power to the HEI when starter is engaged. Splice these lines together to connect to the 12v tab of the HEI.

So if I am understanding your post, you ran a wire from the run circuit of the ignition switch and spliced it with a lead from the "I" post on the starter relay and connected those the "BATT" terminal on the distributor cap - correct?
Thanks for your reply as well

How are the tabs marked? BATT and TACH? If so, then, yes, the wire is hooked to BATT. It must be 12v and not the lower voltage that is present at the Duraspark coil. As I am looking at your first post, your HEI has everything (coil, ignition module) built in correct? If so, you do not need to do any wiring concerning the Duraspark module

I do have the distributor cap marked and wired correctly. My question was regarding the back of the ignition switch; Do I use a "Start" tab or "IGN 1 " tab? I currently have a wire from the "start" tab on the back of the ignition switch wired directly to the "BATT" terminal on the distributor

Your best bet is to use a voltmeter to check that START tab. See if you have power there when you turn the key to start. If so, that would be your 12v START source. Personally, I would still use the 'I' tab on the starter solenoid. Does the same thing, but wiring is so much easier.
