Are there any problems with the 2002 powerstrokes? I am looking at one totrade my 97 for and I am scared because my Dad has an 02 and has had many problems with his. Is there anything specific to look for??
Go to the read first on top of the 99-2003 page you will find a write up/list on that question.I think the most negatives is on My 2001 psd over the weakness in the auto transmission,My trany got 220k.with out problems.
My 02 has been great, in fact it has been so great that if I want trouble I have to log in here and look for it. what kinds of troubles did your dad have with his, and what did he use it for?
I sold my 94.5 PSD Dually and bought my 2002 back in July. Other than replacing rear leafs (had a broken one) and putting on a Red Head Stearing box my truck has been trouble free. Mechanically the 7.3 is in perfect condition compared to my 94.5. It fires right up after letting the GP's warm up in the winter without the block heater...even down to -15*.
So look at the typical things as noted and if all seems in check then trade up without fear!

Well, he uses it for pulling a 28ft gooseneck with the big 873 and s250 bobcats and RR ties because he ownes a custom fencing business. he has had to replace injectors twice since he got it and the wiring harness. also the clutch but thats cause he uses the tranny and engine for braking.
(afterwards he found out he shouldnt do that). And I think the flipper in the turbo. so maybe he just got a lemon since he bought it used?? he also puts dyed diesel in it even though its illegal. lol hes just really rough on trucks. although his 99 7.3 he has never opened the engine and it has over 450k HARD miles on it as that was the precursour to the 02. the 02 is also a dually 350 with 4.10. the 99 was a 250 with 3.37's. both are 6 spd manuals and he liked the 99 better for mileage and it pulled just fine. what do you all think?? just a lemon? or a combination of all that he did.
I would not call the '02 truck a lemon. Agri diesel was ok for some engines. I guess you could maybe get away with it with a really good screens, pre-filter, and 2 micron post filter. I have no idea what level of filter tractor manufacturers use for their engines or what type of injectors they run anymore...I left the farm a long time ago. I know guys that swear there is no difference but I won't run it in mine with the new injectors....not even with the described filters. I've seen some of the stuff that gets caught in the tank screen on our skid steer. There are some hefty penalties if you get caught with it on the road.
I would not make a decision based solely on your fathers experience. These trucks are getting long in the tooth...if it has been well maintained and the money is right you'll probably be ok. He should know the trouble spots and what to look for.
If you have not done so already, you may want to visit the third from the top post in the 7.3 forum 1999 - 2003 7.3L Power Stroke Diesel - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums and read it as Crop Harvester suggested. There is a ton of info there and the guys here are indispensable.
ok thanks. and i did go to the link as suggested. you guys on here are great. he also drives a lot of gravel. the dyed agri diesel is supposed to have better lubricants in it, at least thats what he says. but thanks for all your info guys, its much appreciated.
