We recently purchased a 1999 Holiday Rambler motorhome on an F53 chassis. Knew it needed a little work. Dealer said all it needed to repair speedo was sensor on rear end. Ha strike one. Replaced VSS still no speedo check engine and abs lights on. No speed reading with snap on scanner at odb port. I'm afraid it is the abs module but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Retired, limited budget, scared to go to ford dealer. Thanks, Steve
I too, suspect the ABS module, but before you do that, if you have the ability, trace out the wiring from the VSS to the ABS module, and make sure there are no breaks in it anywhere.
Second, hook a digital multimeter to the VSS sensor, set the meter to AC volts, and make sure you get somewhere around .2-.3 volts when the diff is spinning. Of course, this is a problem, because how do you get the diff to spin while you're under it with a meter? It means jacking it up and running the engine in drive. Or pulling one axle, making sure you have the parking brake set (and it works) and the wheels chocked.
If you do get voltage at the VSS, go back to the ABS module and figure out which wires it's on, and check for voltage there, you should get the same .2-.3 volts.
You need an EVTM to figure out the wiring. See below for the 2001 F-series, I picked F-superduty (F53), but it shows me pickup, probably the same wire colors.
Oh, and don't be afraid of swapping out the ABS module yourself, it's not hard. It screws onto the ABS valve assembly, and you should be able to get a compatible ABS module from a junkyard. It's a Kelsey-Hayes system.

Thanks for the reply. Will check it out when the weather is better and let you know. Steve
