A few years back I had the original AOD in my 89 E-150 rebuilt. After the rebuild the gears are extremely loud and whine loudly in every gear.
Is there a source for new gears for an AOD? This transmission used to be almost silent but now the transmission gears are as loud as the engine. Any tips appreciated.
I may be FOS, but you should never have had "gear whine" out of an automatic. I would shop for a rebuilt trans. If your pan isn't full of metal, and if your trans is still working, you might want to call the Pope and apply for miracle review.
Well sure run it till it drops, but to eliminate the whine will take another rebuild and probably a donor trans, so just keep your eye out for a decent replacement. '88-'93 are the preferred years.
Thanks. I have a rebuilt C-6 ready to go. I was contemplating a swithc to the 4r70W gearset, but everyone says to swap all the internals when switching the gears.
If the gear train is failing it wont take long for signs of metal contamination like sticky valves and governor.
One thing to check is the mount, if its has failed or collapsed it can allow the case of the transmission to contact the crossmember. Sometimes this can make the sound of the gear train more noticeable. Years ago when Cadillac had the TH400 in them, the mount would collapse and the vehicle would sound like a school bus.
