Help ID rears

1974 F-250 4x4. Can you tell me what rears are on this. I was told by the PO that it has Dana 60's front and rear, but they look small compared to my 1999 F350.

The rear is a D60. The rear D60 is nothing to brag about. Thin axle tubes and small diameter axle shafts.

I can't make a judgement call on the front. A picture of the steering knuckle on the front will conclusively tell if it is a D60. Ball joints, it is a D44. King pins it is a D60. Where the top ball joint would be on a D44 the D60 has a large cap with 4 bolts holding it down.

Here's another picture of the front end. Can you with that tell if it's a 40 or 60.

Gee whiz.... I'd scrape off the gunk and read the axle stampings and decode the BOM number.

This is what I found Dana 44 on Left, Dana 60 on Right.
Could this be right?

Crawl up under there and look for the info stamped, cast, and tagged on the axles for items 1 thru 5 on the image above

I say very common D60 rear, and for the front it looks like a 74-75.5 Ford low pinion, drivers side closed knuckle, drum brake with 30 spline inners, 19 spline outers, small ujoints and weak knuckles D60.

But I am wrong all the time, so go here to double ck me.

You can also measure the outer hub diameter, D60 is bigger than a D44 and D44 diff cover has smaller bolt heads that a D60.

77&79F250- I'm not experiencing any problems w/ the front rear. What inherent problems are there? Are you saying that the front year should be changed out. I was thinking later in time to switch to a disc front year.

It is good enough for Ford in the day and for a DD now days, but if you wheel it hard there are better axles to use, that's all.

On those closed knuckles, is there any maintenance, such as putting wheel bearing grease on the exposed section of the ball?

Not that I know of, I hear those closed knuckles are prone to leak on that main scraper seal...
