i have a 1973/12 month build date f250 i am trying to id the front and rear
diffs any good sites to help me out i believe the front to be a 44 and rear to be
70 but am unsure
A '73 F250 4wd should have a Dana 60 rear and either a Dana 44-6CF or 44-6CF-HD front axle. Both front axles had closed knuckles and 12" drum brakes, the primary difference was in the size of the outer components. The HD axle had about a 3550lb GAWR, the standard axle had about a 3300lb GAWR. You can tell the difference by looking at the size of the lockout hubs - the standard axle had a tapered hub with a 1/2 ton sized lockout, the hubs on the HD axle weren't tapered and have huge lockouts. You can also count the number of bolts holding the wiper seals to the closed-knuckle ball on back side of each hub, wiper seals on the HD axles will have 12 bolts, the standard axles have 8 (I think).
I don't think that a true Dana 60 front end was a regularly available option in '73.
What they said. If your also looking to find out the gear ratio, and if it has a track lock(limited slip), then check the tag of the bolt covers and show the numbers on here for some help with that.
