what axles do I have?
I just bought a 1979 ford truck with one ton axles under it. I think. The front axle is either eight or ten lug. cant remeber off hand. the lock outs are huge! The axle does not have ball joints. instead it has a huge ball at either end that the wheels pivit on. The rear end is 8600 gvw or over. What is this monsterous front end that I have. I don't believe it is the stock axles for a 79. Any help would be gladly excepted.

With an 8600 its two dana 60's.Ive read that all 78-79 4x4 with over a 8000 gvw is 2 dana 60s or with a rear 70.Does your front wheel/brake assembly look like this?

no. it has a big ball at the end. kind of like a tie rod end but about 13 in round. i will try to get a photo. military possibly?
by the way it has drums on front. could it just be a closed knuckle dana 60? is there such a thing?
