need axle identification help

i'm looking at a pre77 3/4 ton 4x4. the rear axle is a dana 60, but i cannot look in the door for the weight so i need to know how i can tell if the front axle is a 44hd or 60. it is the kind where the u joints are enclosed and that's all i've got so far. i will try to get some tag numbers, but if i can't is there any way to tell a 60 front axle from a 44?

Most Dana 44's used ball joints. Most Dana 60's used kingpins. Measure the size of the rear cover. If iit's a 60 front axle, the cover will be the same size as the rear. If it's a 44, it should be smaller. Also, on Dana axles, the model # is cast into the housing, usually on a lower corner viewable from the cover side. If all else fails, look up the bill of materials number on the axle on the Dana website www2.dana.com/expert It's a 6 or 7 digit number if I remember correctly.
