hello I am new here. I got this code and thanks to this sight I have checked a few things. half the motor is not working. I have changed gaskets on both sides but its the passenger side not working. everything looked fine when I took the valve covers off. I went ahead and changed the pigtail on the passenger side. still didn't run good. found some build up on the wiring harness plugs on the valve cover were it connects to the harness going to the idm and at the idm. cleaned all that. looked for any short on the wiring harness were it rest on the valve cover were it bolts together. changed the idm. still runs bad. when I had my son turn the key on yesterday I could here a hissing sound by the fuel filter but it stops after a few seconds not sure what that is. cant see anything leaking not sure if that hissing is normal. I am not sure what else to do. I know half the motor is not working because I used inferred thermometer and none of the exhaust ports are hot on that side. thanks for any help.
Welcome to FTE. You need to get a multi-meter and ohm the pins at the valve cover connector going to the injectors on the dead side. A bad injector solenoid can cause the entire bank to be shut down.
You'll want to ohm the 3rd, 4th, 6th & 7th pins against the very center pin (key off) and see what reading you get. They should read less than 5 ohms, but the key is consistency. If you've got one injector reading 0.5 ohms or more different than the other 3, unplug that injector and see if the truck will start and run a little better. (you might have to clear the codes first)
Do you have a volt ohm meter. Have you checked the injectors on that side. IIRC one shorted injector can cause a side to shut down. If you don't have a meter you could try disconnecting one injector at a time.
Did the plug going to the passenger side vlv cover look like it was burned? Have you tried wiggling it with the truck running to see if it makes any difference?
edit... Chris types faster than I do. Better explanation too
UVCH link in my signature will likely help. It also wouldn't hurt to check those same connections in relation to ground - a chafed wire may be getting you.
thank you so much I will try that this weekend. so its ok to start the truck with the big tube off that is going to the intake that crosses over the valve cover? yes I tried moving the wires around while the truck was running but did not make a difference. again thank you for your help. I am trying so hard to fix this myself without taking it to a shop. I like to doing this myself but this one is kicking my butt.
I've started mine many times without the IC tubes and intake connected, but there are caveats: Nothing, and I mean nothing, should be close to either open hole. This includes your hands. The suction is profound, and you don't want anything but air going in there. Idling/a little revving in the controlled environment of the driveway is one thing, but driving with that off is not recommended. If you have a windy day while running open, there is no way to control what approaches the intake.
after you said the injector solenoid short could shut one side down of the motor , all the pieces of the puzzle are coming to gather. after I went to sleep last night, I started thinking about when I started the truck after I let it sit a couple of days to get a break from it . I started the truck and it sounded like it had air in the system and the truck was shaking . and the hissing sound I heard with the key on I think was fuel leaking pass the injector.. I also took the fuel filter cap off Sunday and walked away for a few minutes and when I came back the fuel level in the bowl had gone down. so I think it is an injector bad. now just got to figure out which one. I am ready for the weekend so I can start back on this truck. thank you everybody for your help. you make this a great sight to come to for information
The hissing sound will be a different issue, like a boost leak. The fuel draining down may be a bad O-ring, but that could cause other issues that will confuse matters for now. With the VCs open, you can unplug one injector at a time (don't do it while running), to find which has no impact on how it runs. If you have a laser thermometer (or an IR unit that can read 500 degrees F), then this would be the pull of a trigger. Well... 8 pulls of the trigger.
