Hello everyone. Over the last few weeks, I have been struggling with my 1999 F450. I have studied the previous posts, but still have one question. Can one or more bad injector cause a 1316 code? The truck has 300,000 miles on it. It is running very rough and doesn't have enough power to get it rolling. I finally saved enough to buy the software from riffraff diesel and I checked the uvch both by removing the covers and with a meter. I checked the truck harness which checked good. The ICP is around 590psi at idle. The cylinder contribution test showed cylinders 1, 3, and 5 with a balance fault. The fuel filter has been replaced 2 times. (Napa gold brand) this problem came up suddenly. One day it was running fine, the next I get the ses light and spend 20 mins to go a couple of miles to get home.
Are the valve covers on or off right now? Sounds like it's just a loose plug on the passenger side with the balance fault you're seeing. I guess it could be a blown o-ring on that side. Did you do a buzz test? How do 1, 3 & 5 sound compared to the rest of them? If you remove the valve cover and wiggle the plug at the pass thru connector, does it change the way it runs? Are those injectors spitting oil? Is #7 spitting oil? If all the injectors are dead on that side you may have a bad injector soleniod that's causing the entire bank to be shut down.
I did do a buzz test, a couple of times. Didn't hear the buzzzing on the right side, but this was the first time I have done this, so I'm not really sure what it should sound like. The valve covers are on right now, and I didn't see those posts before i reinstalled them, so I'm not sure about the oil "spitting". Wiggling the wires makes no difference at all. I did check the wiring for shorting due to rubbing against the valve covers and saw no damage. I also checked the wiring harness at the right side valve cover for a short to ground and found none. I will pull the cover back off tomorrow to check the oil flow. I guess if there is no oiul spittting out of those three injectors, do i assume that they are bad? It seems to me that 3 going bad at the same time would be rare, but maybe not. Is there a way to test the IDM? I would hate to buy a new one and it not fix the problem.
by the way, Thank you very much for the quick reply. mike
I have cleared the codes several times and they just come back right after start up. The buzz test didn't change after they were cleared. The resistance values on all 8 injectors were about 3.5 ohms and the glow plugs were about 1 ohm. (I installed new glow plugs while I had the covers off) The ses light goes out after a while, but it will come back on and the way the motor runs and the power level doesn't change either way.
