I have an 2002 F150 Lariat 5.4L. Truck has performed great during its life. - some rocker rust. I am sure I am in good company.
Well just this week my remote start is getting hung up. It engages the starter and cranks for 2 seconds and just stops. On the dash the "THEFT" light is flashing. SO this tells me the car is not recognizing the key chip or a bypass for the starter to start without a key. Anyone else seen this?
It is a Ford Lincoln Mercury installed option.
I checked all the door sensors to confirm they are all closed.
I put in valet mode and back out to see if this resets, no good.
I am out of options.
Would love to see if there is some wisdom on the topic.
your truck does not have a "chip key" so that can not be the problem.
was the battery disconnected for any length of time, or did it go dead?
a dead or disconnected battery will cause the start module to loose it's memory, and need to be reprogrammed.
if it is a viper or one of the other premium remote start units they have lifetime programming. not sure what unit the ford dealerships use though.
Well I did not think it had a chip key. Key looks standard. But if I engage the remote start while the truck is running (for when you want to leave running as you leave the truck with keys) it works. Another piece of the puzzle.
Not Batt was changed last winter and has been stable ever since.
I need to look up my turck owners manual to see how the theft light works. I am sure it has to do with this.
And according to my user manual I do have coded keys. Not sure if they really are but that is what it says. Has a whole section on how to add a coded key. But I have no issues starting the truck with my key.
Ok, I tend to agree with you. Key does look rather standard. Do you have any idea how the theft mechanism works on a 02 pickup if the key is indeed not chipped? It has to do some sort of validation for the engine.
My next attempt is to trace the security system emergency switch back to the alarm module and check the connections and maybe reseat them.
I spoke to the 1800 hotline number in the provided documentation for the remote starter. They have seen this problem. It is related to the bypass module. I need to bring it into Ford to have them replace the module.
I will first try to locate it myself and see if I can get the part myself. Would have to pay big dealer money if it is a simple fix.
