My brothers 2001 is having an issue with the fuel pump. It has a random no fuel pump basically the fuel pump does not come in, he turns the ignition off then back on and you can then hear the fuel pump turn on and the truck starts and runs normally. I'm not looking forward to dropping the tank to replace the sending unit so I was thinking maybe the relay is the issue? I'd eater do that than a sending unit job LOL
Ive had troubles with fuel relays, and even the inertia cut off switch on a car once. I would start with verifying if there is voltage running to the pump first, then try a new fuel relay since they are the cheapest to start with.
Another issue, not necessarily on Ford trucks... honestly cannot remember what rig it was, but I had weird issues because the ignition in the column was bad. The ignition switch that the key cylinder connected that runs the power for the car. However I dont think it affected the fuel pump though.
Ok its been a while but my brothers truck has started acting up the past few days again. The relay has been working for well over a month then bam few days ago same thing no start he cycles the key a few times and he then hears the fuel pump and the truck starts and runs normally. So could it be time for a new sending unit??
You can buy the whole unit or you can buy just the pump.
Example: The whole unit (pump & sender) runs around $300 for a Motorcraft from Rockauto. OTOH, an Airtex pump and strainer is less than $100. A cheap "economy" pump and strainer starts at under $30.
Be careful, there are a lot of variables depending on emissions standard, fuel tank size, tank and body style, etc. Make sure the correct part is ordered.
For a one owner truck that only has 115k i would expect the pump to have another 100k easy on it, especially since my 2004 F350 with 5.4 has 135k and everything but brake pads, ball joints are original. And i mean even all the exterior light bulbs are original
You have a dead spot on your Fuel Pump motor Armature. My truck did the same thing. Could never catch it with fuel pressure gauge attached. It did it while I was at dealer, picking up paper work. They changed the pump out , and gave me the old part. I tested it at my works vehicle shop, we couldn't get it to malfunction till we submerged it in the parts washer.
