It seems that my fuel pump is out. I went to start my EX and when i did it would not stay running but would idle rough then die. Started it again and it did the same thing and the fourth time it would turn over but not fire. So I decided it must fuel related.
I changed the fuel filter thinking maybe it was clogged and it is the cheapest fix for a possible fuel problem. Well after that the truck would turn over but not start. So I jumped in the forum to see if anything else might cause this problem. I read about the fuel pump relay, cam positioning sensor and of course the fuel pump.
Does anyone know where the fuel pump relay is on a 2004 Excursion 6.8l? Is there anything else i have not thought of relating to the fuel problem?
I have not checked pressure at the fuel rail and I could not hear the fuel pump run when the key was turned on, but i never heard it before.
If it is the fuel pump, can i just replace the actual pump or do i have to change the entire module?

Thanks for any help
Your relay is part of the CJB and not replaceable , My money is on the pump itself. I think Tom did a writeup on the pump replacement and it should be in the tech folder..
I have read the pump replacement thread and am subscribed to it. Is it best to go with an OEM pump, Bosch, Airtex or Spectra? Anyone have an opinion or tried one of the off brands? Thanks
My pump failure played out exactly as you described yours. I went with a Motorcraft replacement unit, once I got the correct one, my EX is a Cali spec rig without any under hood stickers indicating that.
You can just get the actual pump part of the unit for less money, I have no idea about other brand's reliability. Pretty simple job really once you empty the tank out.
I saw a YouTube video showing how to install a bypass relay so you can replace with a 30A universal relay if it fails again. I am planning on doing this after I put in a new fuel pump.
I’m a 6.0 guy so I’m shooting in the dark here. Isn’t there an emergency gas shut off switch in the rear of your X? If so, you might want to check that for proper operation before you attempt a fuel pump replacement.
Thanks. I did check the inertia switch. Even jumped the pink wire with 12V+ to bypass the relay and still no fuel pressure.
Changed it today and it fired right up.
