I have a 01 F350 4x4 and my drivers side tire is wearing on the inside. I thought it might be the allignment but the shop said it was perfect. What could be the issue? The tie rod? How would I go about looking to see if it was bad?
jack up the front end, grab the tire top/ bottom, and wiggle top to bottom. if it moves, something is wrong.
then grab the tire front back and wiggle again, if you get movement something is bad in the steering linkage, most likely a tie rod end.
top/bottom play could also be bad wheel bearing assembly, but you would hear a grinding noise while driving if it is a wheel bearing assembly.
another good way to check ball joints is to jack up the side in question just enough to get a pry bar or crow bar under the tire. Have someone lift and lower on the bar while you watch the ball joints for movement.
