Let's talk Timing again.

So I posted a thread some time back regarding timing on my 7.3 non turbo with a Banks Sidewinder. I did a search for the thread but to no avail. So as a refresher: 8 degrees advanced at 2000 rpm. On the previous thread one person mentioned......I believe: that you will pick up some torque and mileage if you retard it a bit from 8 degrees. So my question would be, how much? Are we talking like 2 degrees back to 6 degrees advance @ 2000 rpm?

Thanks,

if you rent timing tools, just set it at 8 BTDC.this is in the middle of the spectrum.if you own a meter then experiment with 6-10 BTDC.running a few tanks worth of fuel at each setting and see what your truck seems to like most.
the only thing iv personally experienced over 8 BTDC was increased engine rattle.others claim performance comes with the rattle.
the banks spools really snappy.as you know,it's just like n/a pretty much.but as a general rule, a bit more retarded will cause the turbo to spool quicker.basically, you can set it set it and forget at 8 BTDC and not worry about loosing out on anything.if you own the timing tools, have fun and experiment.

Thanks! I just purchased my pulse converter and tachometer timing light with the advance scale on it so I can mess around with it. It was around 8, I just barely moved pump and it is around 2 degrees right now. I will try around 6 degrees for a starter.

8-9 for NA 7-8 for turbo seems to be the sweet spots. The bigger turbo and more fuel / boost you run the more retarded it will like it, like 6.5*

Also, mind, these settings only really work /right/ if you've got a new/not-worn pump. Once you've got 80+K on it, the timing starts to slip and you can get all sorts of odd effects; the 'sweet spot' can move quite a bit and start to vary with RPM(i.e. too retarded low end, works great high end/just right low end, no power high end)... so making sure you've got a good IP is critical to a good tune.

What macrobb said is only too true. At 2k my timing jumps around 6-8* but at idle it is steady at 10*
