Hi
Can anybody tell me what the timing is suppose to be set at on a 1987 6.9 with an ATS 085 turbo? I have the paper work form when the previous owner had turbo installed that says the fuel was turned up and the timing advanced but it doesn't say what it was set at.
Thanks Again
After 83, they are all the same. 8.5 * BTDC using the pulse method, at 2000 rpm. My Kent Moore timing data sheet also calls for 5* +/- 2 at 1400. If you have acess to the luminocity type of set up it is set up at ATDC, but I don't have that info.
Thanks guys.
Is the reason for advancing it to just after TDC due to the turbo? Also is a 1 to 1.5 degree ATDC luminocity setting the same as 8.5 degree BTDC with the pulse method? And what is the Navistar method?
The pulse method senses the fuel in the injection line going to the injector as the pressure increases.
The luminosity probe senses the fire starting to spread through the pre combustion chamber.
Both readings are close to the same, but the degree reading is compensating for where the trigger is detected.
The turbo has little bearing on where you want the timing set.
The closer to TDC the fuel starts pushing against the piston on the combustion stroke, the longer it can push before the piston reaches BDC and the exhaust valve opens.
