V10 Towing Capacity

Hello,
I was looking for some help to solve my problem and I came across this awesome forum. you really have some good info, so I signed up. Well, here's my question I have a 97 ford van, chateau, 8 passenger, with 265/75r16 tires, with a V10. I'm pulling a trailer that's about 7000lbs dry.
I dont what my axle ratio is or my Tranny size. I understand a V10 can pull anything but I'm having a stressful time going up the slightest hills. I lose all the power and crawl up. but I do pretty good on the flat roads. I have a hissing sound now, maybe from the Tranny? My "service engine soon" light just came on,Do I need to change the rear gears ? the tire size? the Tranny? The engine ? Or the whole Vehicle? My goal is to be able to keep my V10 and still pull 10k straight up a cliff. Is there Hope?

I didn't know Ford was using any V10s prior to the '99 model year. Is it the van's original engine?

V10 Towing Capacity

MountainHound,
Yes sir a 97 V10 original. I've learned a little more about my van. I think it has a 4.10 rear axle based on the door sticker. It says "C2" for the axle. I'm wodering if I just have a van made for highway use and not towing. Is it worth altering ?

I suppose this is an E250 or E350? If i remember right the C2 code is a limited slip 4.10 axle and should be fine for towing. The thing I would do is step down to smaller diameter tires and get the best out of your 4.10 ratio. Also I would go to a parts store (AutoZone) etc, and let them pull that code. Your loss of power could also be attributed to that trouble code.

In '97, the E-series was all Ford could wedge the V10 into. They had to wait for the redesign for '99 before they could get it into the F-series. Or, so I read somewhere...

I eagerly awaited it's debut, waited 2 years for the bugs to be worked out and then pursued an '01 F250 SD

Probably the reason for the bull-dog look (or pig, like my wife calls it...).

It's possible that the check engine light is comming on because of a bad speed sensor. If you get an ABS light, dead speedo or flashing OD Off light, I would definately look there. It's a cheap part that'ss easy to replace and could be creating havoc with your PCM. It's a pretty common part to go bad.

Late 97 and all through 98 and they were all E-350's. No V-10 option on the E-250. 275 hp motor choked down to 265 due to the airbox design. But the exhaust is actually quite a bit better than the pick-ups.

My guess is you have the 3.73 axle ratio which allows an 8600 tow rating. The 4.10 gives a 10,300 lb rating if I remember correctly. But remember, this isn't a big cubic inch 460. It's basically a small block V-8 with 2 more cylinders, so you have to rev it to get her up hills. I have the same van and pull approx the same weight trailer, and I have no problems going up almost any hill. I would definitely suggest a tranny cooler and a tranny temp gauge. Over 270 degrees and it's bad ju-ju for the E4OD or the 4R100. But smaller diameter tires will help alot. 10% smaller diameter will give you in effect a 4.10 rear. Or for about $600 you could have a 4.30 or anything you wanted installed AND get limited slip, which vans really, really need. But it's great to have another V-10 vanner here ! Welcome !

Remember that your tow rating has to include passengers, fuel, any luggage, accessories and the complete weight of the trailer and all it's cargo. So a 8600 weight rating minus all the above leaves you with maybe 7500 or so ? Depending on how many passengers and gear you have on board of course. I have the ext length van, so after I get 10 people or so in it and all their gear, I lose a TON in tow rating, yeow,,,,,
