I think my power brake booster is about to give up. I hear vaccuum hissing when I push the brake pedal. The booster was last replaced in 1993 so it has been a good one.
The truck is a 1981 F100 orignally with a 5.0 engine but now with a 351W
and with an AOD transmission.
I want to replace it with a high quality booster but an unsure what to buy.
In research it looks like a Centric rebulit booster might be the best.
It doesn't look like Ford supports this part anymore. I would like to
hear from some FTE members on what they would recommend or
what their experiences hace been with replacing brake boosters.
I have been getting them from the local store, whatever they have. I have had no problems with them. I do know the original Ford boosters must have had a problem, I went to get one from the junkyard a long time ago and the guy at the yard said he wished he had a truckload of those things, everyone was looking for one and he had sold every one he had.
I bet the rebuilders figured out what was wrong with them, and have been making good money on them. Whatever they do, they usually hold up for me. I have noticed all of them have this warning "Do not pull the master pushrod out of the booster" So be careful about that.
I finally replaced the original booster on my '82 this past summer. I got one from the supplier we use for parts at work but I cant remember what brand it was though. Been working great ever since though.
